The Career Development Association (CDA) is a fairly new student organization on the UW campus which was started in 2003. It is affiliated with the Letters and Science/Human Ecology Career Services Office and focuses on career development, career issues, leadership, and networking to prepare students in their transition to the working world. The organization itself is primarily based on student-focused and led career-related events and programs. Members of CDA meet regularly throughout the academic year to hear from recruiters and other professionals about choosing careers, finding jobs, and preparing for life after graduation. Its members also meet to prepare and organize certain events and workshops for UW students to attend and learn more about career-related subjects.
There are two groups that CDA members belong to: Career Event Organizers (CEOs) and Career Workshop Facilitators (CWFs). CEOs plan and produce career-related events throughout the year including “Your Next Big Move,” the Alumni Networking Event, and a Financial Success Seminar. Being a part of the CEO groups, members gain valuable event planning, leadership, and networking experience. CWFs produce and give career-related presentations, such as resume-writing, interviewing, and networking, to fellow students on the UW campus. Being a part of the CWF group, members gain valuable experience in public speaking, organizing presentations, and leadership.
Along with creating new events for the organization, preparing career events and workshops, attending organization meetings with guest speakers, CDA members also assist the L&S/Human Ecology Career Services Office with career fairs. Volunteer opportunities are available through the office at these career fairs, as well as some marketing and event planning for them. In addition, CDA members perform fundraising activities to sustain organization funds for the events and workshops that CDA puts on.
If you are interested in event planning, marketing, employer relations, networking, or facilitating workshops on campus, the Career Development Association is right for you! CDA is always looking for motivated, enthusiastic students to join. By joining CDA, you could be a part of the evolving vision and ambition to provide a quality source of both career programs and employers for UW students and could help determine the mission, goals, committees, communication systems, and fundraising opportunities in CDA. For more information about how you can become involved, email Ryan Schmidt (rschmidt1@wisc.edu) or Kyle Brasser (kbrasser@wisc.edu), CDA co-Presidents.
